There are several ways that ORCID can be leveraged by funding organizations using Altum’s ProposalCentral platform for grant application and reporting workflows. What is already possible in ProposalCentral?

ProposalCentral is an ORCID member, and the ORCID API (application programming interface) is already built in to the platform, allowing users to:

  • Sign in to ProposalCentral using their ORCID login credentials
  • Authorize ProposalCentral as a “trusted organization” on their ORCID record
  • Pre-fill application forms using data imported from their ORCID record
  • Import data directly from their ORCID record into ProposalCentral to save to time and improve accuracy when filling out progress reports
  • Grant permission to allow ProposalCentral to add funding award information to the “Funding” section of their ORCID record, where the source of the ORCID entry will appear as “ProposalCentral.” Example:

Funders can also take advantage of researcher “career dashboard” views in ProposalCentral, to see an overview of funding received and research publications and other outputs based on data from awardees’ ORCID records. Example:

What is possible for funders that become ORCID members?

Funding organizations can also become ORCID members through the ORCID US Community consortium in order to directly support the sustainability of ORCID and increase the visibility of the funding organization in the wider research and scholarly communication landscape. By becoming an ORCID member, funding organizations can take advantage of all of the functionality listed above, but also allow users to:

  • Authorize the funding organization directly as a “trusted organization” on their ORCID record
  • Grant permission to allow ProposalCentral to add funding award information to the “Funding” section of their ORCID record, where the source of the ORCID entry will appear as the name of the funding organization. Example: 

Benefits for funders that become ORCID members

Funders that join the ORCID US Community as ORCID members can benefit in the following ways:

  1. As an ORCID member, your researchers can establish a trusted relationship with your organization on their ORCID record, as opposed to a trusted relationship with ProposalCentral. When award information is added to grantees’ ORCID records, the source of the data appears as the name of the funding organization rather than “ProposalCentral.” This helps to establish more trust and accuracy in the research ecosystem, as a confirmation of the relationship between your organization and your awardees. When other stakeholders (like other funders, publishers, and research institutions) view the ORCID data, they will be able to see that your organization is the source, which is more specific and accurate than having “ProposalCentral” appear as the source. 
  1. If your organization uses other systems in addition to ProposalCentral, and/or if your organization is involved in publishing or other workflows, ORCID membership through the ORCID US Community provides access to 5 ORCID member API credentials, allowing your organization to integrate ORCID with multiple systems in addition to the functionality available within ProposalCentral. 
  1. By joining the ORCID US Community consortium, funding organizations receive:
    • Access to 5 ORCID API credentials for integrating ORCID with various local systems
    • Dedicated support and consultation services to help navigate ORCID adoption and get the most value from ORCID
    • Access to resources, including email templates and tutorial videos, that can be used to communicate with awardees about the benefits of using their ORCID iD in application and reporting workflows and other aspects of a researchers’ career
    • Invitations to join regular community calls and webinars to stay up to date with the latest ORCID developments and hear how other organizations (including other funders, universities, research institutes, and more) are also using ORCID
    • Recognition for being part of the growing community of practice around ORCID in the US
